…surprisingly comfortable….Salon devotees praise her for the space she has created….”

“I think Susana is doing a very brave thing.”

Philadelphia Inquirer, February 10, 2010

“There are laughter and tears along with the hot rush of blood – to the face.

“I never knew such a life of honesty could exist. I finally found a home I can be comfortable in…this event changed my life.

First-time attendee and reader 2013

I regret having to inform, the Salon will be cancelled for this evening. Snow, snow, glorious snow, which I dearly love under other circumstances, is supposed to make traveling most treacherous. I realized I was willing to walk the 10 blocks from my home, but I’m not willing to risk falling. One new hip and another one scheduled for mid-February, day after Salon. Must play wimp.

Stay home, soak in the tub, enjoy!

Ainsley Burrows also had to postpone his presentation. He feared his travel plans would be thwarted, if he couldn’t return home (Brooklyn) in time to make his Wednesday morning flight. Ainsley will definitely be the featured presenter at the April 15th Salon (note it is early in the month, since April 1st  falls on a Tuesday).

In almost 6 years of hosting the Salon I have cancelled only once, for the Obama inauguration – I was invited and then fell ill. So you can imagine how difficult this decision was for me.

For everyone who signed up to read today, Jan. 21 you will automatically be on the February 18th Salon reading list. Please email me if you are unable to attend next month. There will be two featured presenters in February, Monica Day and an Argentine Tango demonstration.

Hope to see you all next month.

Winter Storm Warning in Southeastern, PA

Significant snowfall expected today and tonight followed immediately by bitterly cold air.

A fast moving but potent weather system will bring snow to our entire area today into this evening. As the storm strengthens to our East later today, the winds will increase resulting in areas of blowing and drifting snow. As the storm continues to exit. Bitterly cold air will quickly settle in tonight into Wednesday.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 10 am this morning to 6 am EST Wednesday.

Wind Chill Advisory in effect from 1 am to 11 am EST Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Wind Chill Advisory, which is in effect from 1 am to 11 am EST Wednesday.

  • Snow accumulations: 8 to 12 inches.
  • Timing: snow will overspread the area toward mid to late morning, then continue through this evening.
  • Impacts: travel will become hazardous due to snow covered roads and periods of very low visibility. Areas of blowing and drifting snow will develop especially this evening and tonight. The afternoon and evening rush hour will be significantly impacted.
  • Winds: northeast 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 to 40 mph, becoming north and northwest overnight.
  • Temperatures: mainly in the teens to 20s today, then dropping to the single digits tonight.
  • Wind Chill, as low as 10 below zero. These dangerous values can quickly cause Frostbite to exposed skin and lead to hypothermia.

Recommended actions

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow are expected. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Areas of blowing and drifting snow will greatly reduce the visibility especially in open areas later Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. This will result in snow blowing back onto previously plowed roadways. Use extra caution while driving. A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you must venture outdoors, make sure you wear a hat and gloves.

The Erotic Literary Salon

by Josh Kruger

Word geeks talking genitalic fun—or even use—are lucky to be around these days. It used to be that the only sites to talk freely about intimate exploits were either stiflingly clinical or unnecessarily shameful, with bright neon lights outside and sticky linoleum on the inside. Indeed, safe spaces where people could creatively rant or rave about their awesome, mundane or downright twisted sex lives were primarily on psychiatrists’ couches or barstools a few blocks away from the neighborhood parish. Thank heaven times have changed.

To celebrate both remorseless kinkiness and good ol’ fashioned spoken word, the Erotic Literary Salon brings together an eager audience on every third Tuesday of each month at TIME in Center City, where open souls share five-minute sex-related poems, remembrances and short stories. And for January’s gathering, attendees will welcome Ainsley Burrows, creator of the touring “pop-erotica extravaganza” dubbed Sweet Spot Nation, which hits Philly next month—on the weekend before Valentine’s Day. (Mark that calendar now.)

Burrows, who’s toured professionally as a poet for over a decade, will give a talk with a Q&A before the evening’s open mic—oh, and his ultra-hot poems are going to leave blisters. Here’s to a night that’s as publicly and positively affirming of sex and sexuality as it ought to be. / JOSH KRUGER
