To Burlesque or not to Burlesque?

In recent years, the art of Burlesque has been making a strong and much needed comeback. Taking to the stages of hundreds of theatres and even hitting our screens with a starring performance from Christina Aguilera, Burlesque is back and it’s bigger and better than ever.

Not only has the performance grown, but so has the number of enviable garments, accessories and props, inviting leading Burlesque-style provider Burlesque Dolls to go fashion crazy on their website, http://www.burlesquedolls.com.au/

It’s the beginning of a new year and time to experience new things, so why not Burlesque? Get booked into a show near you, and embrace the live experience – as the saying goes, don’t be shy, give it a try! Not convinced? Here are some reasons why you should attend a Burlesque performance in 2014.

A little piece of history
Keeping up tradition is important and Burlesque artists and producers have certainly worked to secure its presence throughout history. Displaying dancers classed as moderately risqué in style, the Burlesque movement pushed acceptance to the limit, playing on sexuality and priding the female body.

The charm of live entertainment is still a front-runner today, offering engagement and interaction with its audience in a cheeky but charming manner. Burlesque in particular, holds a style and seduction of its own, combining highly skilled dancing with flirtatious and daring characters which was always going to be a recipe for success. But when booking a seat to a performance, you’re not only attending a show, you’re supporting this beautiful timeless tradition.

Drama, drama, drama!
Burlesque performance originates from satire comedy, embracing all things theatrical, dramatic and plain over the top. It’s not however, only about teasing and seducing the audience with nudity and feather boas… there’s much more to it. When producing the show, a wide variety of entertainment acts are included in the choreography, from drag and comedian to musical acts, singers and even spoken word poetry! Every show is different but there’s always something for everyone.

Costumes to die for

Burlesque artists are known for making their own costumes, with the knowledge that the success of an act really does lie in a well-costumed performer. This obsession with presenting an immaculately desirable look is a great display of the passion and devotion to the craft. Nowadays though, with retailers supplying every fabric, design and accessory imaginable, it has become increasingly simple to conjure up and source a dream outfit… so if nothing else, it’s impossible not to appreciate the effort!

Body beautiful

Priding itself on embodying and accepting anyone and everyone, Burlesque performances guarantee to include all different shapes, sizes, colours, sexual orientations and much more.

Nudity and playful striptease may not be something you’re keen to try out for yourself just yet, but the fact remains that it is incredibly reassuring to see so many women, (and men), proud and confident in their own skin. Celebrating curvaceous bodies is never a bad thing, and Burlesque is a true advocate of retaining healthy, happy bodies with a large kick of confidence… something I’m sure we could all do with.
